Arewa Youth Assembly: Tinubu must complete eight years to sustain power rotation

The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has declared that President Bola Tinubu must be allowed to serve out a full eight year tenure to sustain the  power rotation arrangement between the North and the Southern parts of the country.
The group, in a statement issued Sunday in Kaduna by  Mohammed Danlami,  its spokesperson,  cautioned political actors from the North against participating in the 2027 presidential contest, citing the need to preserve national unity and cohesion.
AYA recalled that during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, southern political figures refrained from challenging him, thereby enabling him to complete two terms in office.
It argued that the same principle should be upheld in favour of the South under the present democratic dispensation.
“This is not a matter for debate. We call on the collective conscience of the Northern political elite to recall with gratitude how no southerner of note contested the office against late former President Muhammadu Buhari
“The entire southern region stood down and allowed the North to complete its unbroken cycle of eight years.
“It is now the turn of the South, and under the current democratic dispensation, that cycle must be completed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Danlami said.
The group further warned that any deviation from this understanding would be resisted.
“Any Northerner who decides to violate this sacred understanding and present himself as a candidate or spoiler in 2027 will not only be an enemy of fairness but an enemy of the northern youth.
“We will fight such a person with the full vehemence of our collective will, and we will mount a fierce resistance against any such treacherous endeavour,” the statement said.
Beyond the issue of equity, AYA also pointed to what it described as key reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration across critical sectors, including the economy, security, and infrastructure.
According to the group, “The nation has witnessed the courageous decisions and reforms that have saved an estimated 4 to 7 trillion naira annually from the commonwealth.
“The unification of the exchange rate has likewise restored sanity and transparency to our monetary system.
“These have demonstrably shored up our external reserves from a perilous low of about 4 billion dollars in 2023 to a far healthier position exceeding 20 billion dollars in 2025.
“Furthermore, the crippling debt service to revenue ratio has been slashed from an impossible 97 per cent to below 50 per cent, thereby freeing up resources for critical capital projects..”
The statement emphasised that the reforms remain in progress and require continuity to achieve their intended outcomes, warning that any disruption at this stage could undermine national development efforts.
AYA  reaffirmed its support for the president in the 2027 election, urging him to “disregard the noise from a few political jobbers who claim to speak for a region they have long lost touch with.”
