Hundreds of people in Minna, the Niger state capital,on Monday, trooped to the streets in protest against what they poverty, hunger, and high cost of living.
The protest was said to have started at about 7 am, with the protesters blocking the ever busy Minna – Bida road, thereby obstructing vehicular movement to and from the state capital.
The protesters who were mainly women and youths, also blocked some major roads within Minna metropolis.
The protesters who carried placards with various inscriptions, decried the rising cost of food,increasing insecurity, epileptic power supply.
They also lamented that while Nigerians were finding it extremely difficult to survive as a result of poor government policies, public office holders were living in affluence, at the expense of the people.
Efforts by the police to control the crowd nearly resulted in violence as the protesters asked the police to leave, forcing the police to fire several shots in the air in an attempt to disperse them.
The protesters called on the federal government to take urgent steps to address the situation as Nigerians were becoming hopeless by the day.
