Group expresses concern over alleged fresh  plots to re-arrest Emefiele

A group, Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance (NCWGG), has expressed concern over alleged fresh plans to re-arrest former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
On Wednesday, a federal high court in Abuja granted bail to Emefiele, who had been in detention since his arrest on June 10, 2023.
The former CBN governor was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) after he was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu.
On October 28, he was released by the DSS but was rearrested few hours later by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement on Thursday in Kaduna, the NCWGG, said it was  saddened by revelation about plans  by a security agency to rearrest Emefiele “on trump-up charges to further deny him  his fundamental human rights.
The statement signed by Mallam Ahmed Tanimu, chairman of the group, commended the judiciary for upholding the fundamental principles of justice and the rule of law.
The group called on security agencies to respect court orders and the rule of law.
“We are  saddened by the revelation of the plan by some security agencies to rearrest Dr. Emefiele on trump-up charges to further suppress his fundamental human rights.”
The statement said: “We are consoled that with the recent decisions of the courts, those who violate court orders would not have where to run to. Therefore, the Judiciary should be on the watch for further disobedience to court  orders.
“We commend the judiciary for ordering the immediate release of Mr. Emefiele.
“This decision upholds the fundamental principles of justice and reinforces the significance of respecting the rule of law.
“We believe that it is crucial to provide every citizen with a fair and transparent legal process, and the judiciary’s intervention demonstrates  commitment to upholding justice in our society.
The statement called on security agencies to exercise restraints in  carrying out their duties..
“Excessive use of force against civilians can lead to unnecessary harm and violate their rights.
“We encourage security agencies to focus their efforts on combating banditry and other criminal activities that pose a threat to our nation’s security.”
