A civil society group – Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has decried the continous deteriorating security situation in Zamfara state.
In a statement in Kaduna, Sanusi Mohammed, spokesman of the group, said
even Gusau, the state capital is no longer safe as a result of activities of bandits.
The group accused the state governor, Dauda Lawal, for allegedly “insensitivity and indifference to the plight of the people that trusted him to lead them”.
It said, “the PDP led government under Dauda Lawal is doing nothing but lamentation which is a sign of failure on the side of the government.”
The group noted that since June 2023, bandits have been operating audaciously, unleashing terror on the people.
“Communities have been displaced, people are being kidnapped for ransom, citizens are denied access to farmlands and many others, brutalised or killed on a daily basis”, the group lamented.
The statement said, “Over 400 villages and communities in the state were estimated to be under the control of bandits who are have formed thier government in these areas.
The group urged President Tinubu and the security forces to fight the escalating security challenges in Zamfara “with resolve and awareness of their obligations under the law”.
The group said, victory will only be pronounced when the nation achieves full cessation of hostilities, disarmament, demobilization and reintegration in Zamfara and the entire northern region.
The statement noted that Zamfara has the capacity for feed itself and the rest of Nigeria, but insecurity-a-norm-in-nigeria and exorbitant cost of farming inputs have discouraged farmers.
