Hearing on El-Rufai’s bail application fixed for April 1, returns to ICPC custody

Former governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, has returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai on Tuesday appeared  before the Federal High Court in Kaduna and the state High Hourt in Kaduna to face trial on separate charges.
At the state high court in Kaduna, the proposed arraignment of El-Rufai could not take place because the second defendant in the case was not in court and  the arraignment was adjourned to April 10.
The presiding judge at the Federal High Court, Justice Rilwani Aikawa,  adjourned El-Rufai’s  bail application to Wednesday, April 1.
The prosecutor told the court that the counter affidavit against the bail application was just filed.
On March 24, El-Rufai and Joel Adoga were arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) before the Federal High Court on charges bordering on alleged fraud and money laundering.
The defendants pleaded not guilty. Subsequently, the court adjourned hearing on the bail application to March 31.
On March 27, the ICPC released the former governor on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma in Cairo, Egypt  where she was receiving treatment.
She passed on and was buried in Abuja on  March 28.
After the court proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, El-Rufai  was  taken away by ICPC operatives.
Spokesperson of the ICPC, John Odey, said the former governor is in ICPC custody.
“Temporary leave is different from bail. He was granted temporary leave to attend his mother’s burial. He is still in our custody. We took him to court,” Odey said.
