An unspecified number of persons were reportedly killed on Sunday evening during an attack by gunmen on Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos, the Plateau State capital.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at around 7.30pm, when the assailants stormed the neighbourhood on six motorcycles and opened fire on residents.
According to sources, the attackers shot indiscriminately, leaving several people dead and others injured.
The exact number of casualties could not be ascertained as at press time.
The gunmen were said to have fled the scene immediately after the attack, creating panic among residents.
The incident has heightened tension across the city as horrific video clips of the brutal killings were being circulated on social media platforms.
Unconfirmed sources said the Plateau State Government has imposed a 48 hour curfew across the city, aimed at preventing a breakdown of law and order.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful.
